About Working With Bob Hyland

I AM TRAINED as a landscape designer and horticulturist, with 35 years of garden design and maintenance experience. Gardening is my way of life. (A slideshow sampling some of my recent work can be browsed above; click on “show picture list” to reveal thumbnails, then click on “view with PicLens” to enlarge the photos.)

My Strengths:

  • Hands-on knowledge of a broad spectrum of plants suitable for many climates. I have lived and gardened in San Francisco, New York City, the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania, and the Hudson Valley of New York State.
  • I can match the right plants to architecture, climate, soils.
  • I have an expansive command of woody plants (trees & shrubs) and perennials, annuals and bulbs.
  • An adventurous, flexible design aesthetic that translates well to many settings. I work in a broad range of garden styles – and am a quick study to place (genius loci) and client psychology.
  • I listen to your wants and needs and help you develop your own personal garden style.
  • My connections in the gardening world and travel to public and private gardens across the country provide me with great inspiration and resources. I try to push garden boundaries.
  • My container designs have been featured regionally in the Hudson Valley and Berkshires, and written up in the New York Times and on Martha Stewart Living Television.
